I hope you are enjoying your St.Patrick’s Day.  Many people celebrate by having parties or going to their local pub, but have you ever wondered what cities in the U.S. have the best St. Patrick’s Day celebrations?  I did a little research and found the top 5 cities to visit when you want to party on March 17th.

New York, NY

The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City was in 1762 and it is now one of the largest in the world!  It attracts more than 200 million people a year and has close to 150,000 participants.  The parade begins at 44th street and marches up 5th avenue to 79th street.

Boston. MA

With its rich Irish heritage there is no wonder that Boston has one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.  Since 1901 South Boston has hosted a parade (which runs the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day) where thousands of people march to celebrate all things green.  On the holiday itself there are plenty of pubs and parties to attend or you can visit the Irish Heritage Trail to learn about the Irish community in Boston.

Chicago, IL

Every city on this list holds a large parade for St. Patrick’s Day, but not every city paints a major river green!  For 60 years the city of Chicago has dyed the Chicago River green during the parade which is held the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day.

Savannah, GA

The second largest St. Patrick’s Day party in the United States is found in Savannah, GA. The parade is held on March 17th (unless it’s a Sunday) and attracts close to 500,000 visitors.  The celebrations which include food and music festivals last for several days.

San Francisco, CA

San Francisco holds the western U.S.’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day Parade which runs from the corner of 2nd and Market to Civic Center.  On St. Patrick’s Day the city’s Irish Cultural Center also throws its annual Green Fest Block Party with dancing, music and Irish cultural activities. If you want more parties go the the Financial District where you can hop from block party to block party.
